Whilst these fish can survive in a little cup, it isn't right. Their natural environment is a large, shallow body of water. In the cups, they frequently have so little room that they can barely turn. What's more, they have nowhere to hide or rest, so can become quite stressed. Stupidly, the petshops don't cover these glasses - stressed bettas jump!
They often sell the bettas in tiny 1/2 gallon tanks or uncovered bowls - both better than a cup, but still not great. Bettas do really well in a 5 gallon tank!

Yes and no.

Yes it is, because they can give them a larger space to live.

No, because if they did put them together then it would be animal abuse because they would be fighting. So they should get a larger space for the bettas to live. But they should not put them together.

yes and actually i do not shop at any fish store that would do so ... those little cups also perpetuate the belief that bettas can live in small amounts of water when they actually originate from rice paddies (over 100 gallons) and slow moving rivers ... the only reason they are kept cruelly is for money ... they can not be kept together because they would fight and they can only be in certain community tanks so it is just easier to keep them cruelly and easier to have more to sell if kept in small containers ...

Unfortunately, yes.
It's true that Bettas don't need a ton of space or huge tanks, but come on, seriously? How do they expect that the fish will be okay when shoved into a tiny cup?!
I understand why they do this, however. Betta fish cannot be kept together, therefore it would take a lot of space and money to set up 20 separate tanks with one fish in each.
I guess they are just assuming someone will buy them quickly and put it in a larger tank, but most of the time the Bettas are at the store for a fairly long time.
I understand why they do this, but I think it's cruel. It makes me feel happy when I buy one and put them in a nice, roomy 5 gallon :)

Yes, I see it as cruel. They only do it though because the fish cannot be in a tank with other fish, or they will attack eachother. But still, that is very cruel because they have to stay in there for possibly years with nothing to do. The fish are very stressful in there.

Personally I don't think its right to put them in such small cups. Even though I know they can't house that many male bettas in other tanks without some trouble so the understand of why they do it is known but still don't like the practice. Though Petco the other day did have a betta in with bala sharks =/ Of course the poor thing was dead though so go figure.
